Library history

 

The former Mubarak Egypt Public Library was established under a cooperation agreement to establish and operate  between the Egyptian Ministry of Culture represented by the Minister of Culture and the President of the German Bertelsmann Foundation on January 31, 1993, and the first Board of Directors of the Egypt Public Library was formed in 1994.

 The President of the Republic opened the library on Monday, March 21, 1995, in the presence of the President of the German Bundestag, the German Foreign Minister, and Mr. 

Reinhard Mühn, President of the German Bertelsmann Foundation, Mrs. His wife, Mr. Ambassador Abdel Raouf Al-Ridi, Chairman of the Library’s Board of Directors, Mr. Ambassador of  the Federal Republic of Germany in Cairo, and a large number of ministers and senior public figures.

The Egyptian Public Library from a nascent library to a nascent library   

The first branch is the Egyptian Public Library in Zaytoun

 A supplementary agreement was signed between the Egyptian Ministry of Culture and the Bertelsmann Foundation to establish and operate branch libraries on 10/22/1997. This agreement was initially based on the agreement concluded between the Ministry of Culture and the Bertelsmann Foundation on 1/31/1993, with the participation of the Integrated Care Society and the Egypt Culture Society. and Community Development currently), which donated a building in the Al-Zaytoun area that was developed to become the first branch of the library and was opened on March 21, 1999.

On June 20, 2000, the library launched an initiative to establish regional libraries in the governorates. A number of governors responded to this initiative, and the process of establishing these libraries began. Presidential Decree No. 49 of 2006 was issued on 02/07/2006, amended by Decree of the President of the Armed Forces No. 67 of 2011.  This decision became the Which organizes the work of the main library and regional libraries and also established the  Regional Libraries Support Fund. The fund aims to support Egypt’s public libraries in all governorates so that they achieve their mission  of spreading cultural awareness among citizens.

The establishment of Egypt's regional public libraries in the governorate capitals and their branches in cities and villages shall be by decision  of the competent governor in coordination with the Board of Directors of the main Egypt Public Library, and the purpose of the  regional library shall be to achieve the goals of the main Egypt Public Library in each governorate.

 The second branch, Egypt Public Library, Al-Zawya Al-Hamra Branch

On 11/18/2006, an agreement was signed between the governments of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Kingdom of Denmark. It was signed on the Egyptian side by the Ministry of International Cooperation, through the Head of the European International Cooperation Sector and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, representing the Government of Denmark, to establish the second branch of the library in the Al-Zawia Al-Hamra area. It was  opened on March 30. 2014.

Egypt's public libraries are committed, in their systems, regulations and activities, to taking into account international standards for public libraries. Egypt's public libraries work to acquire the latest products of human thought in science and literature. They also work  to provide the latest technical and electronic devices and train children and young people in particular to use them and benefit from their services in the acquisition of science and knowledge. .

- Egypt’s public libraries seek to make their services accessible to those who are unable to frequent their headquarters, and  in this way, they follow the means necessary to achieve this purpose.

Egypt's public libraries work to contact universities and schools to encourage students to benefit from their services and participate in their activities.

- Coordination takes place between the activities and services of Egypt’s public libraries, the Library of Alexandria, Dar al-Kutub, and  other public libraries, with the aim of integrating these services and activities.

Egypt’s public libraries, in coordination with popular and executive bodies and civil associations, seek to raise  the local community and the cultural level of women, especially in rural communities.
